Sixteen Per Cent Increase in US Container Imports First Half 2010

Container Importing in the US has risen about 16% in the first half of this year. Double-digit increases are expected to be seen throughout the summer months. This gives our nation hope as the first signs of economic recovery start to emerge.

This month’s Global Port Tracker report said that “the US ports handled 1.15 million TEUs in April. That was up 7% from March and up 16% from April 2009. It was also the fifth month in a row to show a year-over-year improvement after December broke a 28-month streak of year-over-year monthly declines.

The increase in demand on the ocean shipping business has resulted in a reinstitution of almost all services offered by international shipping companies. Ocean carriers see the growth as a sustainable one and expect that the economy is truly in recovery. Ocean cargo shippers and ports alike are expanding services and creating jobs, which should only further encourage growth and recovery in the US.
